Frequently Asked Questions About Nolan Consulting Group’s Contractor & Trades Business Consulting Services

How did Nolan Consulting Group start?

In 2004, Brian Nolan and his brother, Kevin Nolan (President of Nolan Painting) partnered to start Nolan Consulting Group with the intent to help Business Owners in the Trades take their businesses to the next level.

With their combined experience and industry knowledge, in partnership with a growing team of NCG Team and Coaches, Brian and Kevin have worked with hundreds of Business Owners over the last 18+ years. The Goal? To get Business Owners “Out of the Hourglass” and transition from a lifestyle business to a value business.

What does it mean to “Get out of the Hourglass”?

When you operate as a Business in an “Hourglass,” every decision, detail, and process of your day-to-day operations is running through you, the Business Owner. Sure, this might work well at the very beginning of your company’s life cycle, but you’ll quickly learn it is not sustainable!

The business is dependent on a single person’s involvement – YOU! The business is therefore limited in its ability to grow and remain manageable. When you stop working in a Lifestyle Business, your business ceases to exist…. It only pays when you’re working in the business.

We want to get you OUT of that hourglass feeling. A place where the business is no longer dependent on one person, but an effective team of leaders. In a Value Business, you’re developing systems and roles so that your business can run without you some day. It’s a business that grows in value.

What services does Nolan Consulting Group offer?

Nolan Consulting Group offers Business Coaching and Consulting for Businesses in the Trades Industries.

Most clients start with our Business Planning Package, a 3-Month Business Planning & Budget Process that establishes the needs of the business and develops the action plan. This works in tandem with our Cascading Planning Cycle. (CPC).

Once you have completed the first 3 months, we then offer continued individualized coaching or our Summit Program.

Individual Coaching: Our team can work with you one-on-one to execute your plan & vision. Our NCG Coaches provide ongoing accountability, implementation support, and engage in your personal leadership development.

The Summit Program, our most popular Program: If you prefer working with a Coach one-on-one AND would like the opportunity to leverage the power of a networking group, the Summit Program might be for you! This Summit Program is designed to help contractors just like you learn more via best practices and connect with industry leaders in a professional and supportive environment. We host Mastermind Forums and Peer Groups, as well as specialized workshops in Field Leadership, Operations, Sales, and more.

Our Succession Planning Process (SPP) (New in 2023!) is designed to work with Business Owners who are ready to plan for the final phase of their business. Like many of our clients, you have devoted countless hours and energy to a company that has impacted your life and family. When it is time, it makes sense that you’ll want to carefully and thoughtfully exit your business that you so passionately created. Whether you are looking to sell, transfer management, or build a board of directors, our team can work with you to formulate and implement your plan for the future.

What size (revenue) companies does NCG work with?

NCG works with a wide range of revenue-sized companies. We are trained to assess the needs of each company and develop strategic planning based on the Company Vision.

Those clients that have found the best success with NCG are those who begin working with us around the $1M revenue mark, but we do work with clients at smaller revenue sizes. We are happy to have individual conversations to help guide this decision.

We also work with large teams and those companies with revenues up to $40M+. It’s been exciting to watch the companies we work with grow their revenue and build high-performing teams!

Do you work with companies local to Philadelphia?

We work with contractors local to Philadelphia, as well as businesses across the United States and Canada. We typically work with our clients via Zoom but also offer on-site meetings and workshops for more in-person opportunities!

Our offices are in Ardmore, PA – just a quick 15-minute ride outside of Philadelphia! Fun fact – we can see the Philly Skyline from our office window:)

Is it okay if I’ve never worked with a Business Coach or Consultant before?

Of course! You do not need to have any coaching or consulting experience to work with NCG.

What should I expect in working with a Coach?

When working with an NCG Coach, you can expect genuine care for the success of your business. Your success is our success. Your challenges are our challenges.

Over a third of our clients have been working with us for 10+ years and we credit that to the relationship and trust we have established with these Business Owners and their teams. We aim to become a trusted advisor and a reliable constant in the turbulent and sometimes messy world of small business.

What is the time commitment in working with a Coach?

Depending upon the service selection, you should expect several meeting-heavy months at the start of our relationship. After the first 3-4 months, we roll into monthly coaching calls with additional follow-up calls and support as needed.

The expectation for all program relationships is that you are working on your action items, implementation plans, and updating your financials between meetings. This helps to set the tone for productive and efficient coaching calls!

Do you offer Sales or Operations Training for Companies?

Yes! We are deeply committed to downstream engagement within your organization. It’s essential to continue the development of your leaders. As your company grows, your leaders need to be able to grow with you!

NCG offers a variety of topical training and Accountability Peer Groups to existing clients.

Training includes but is not limited to:

  • Advanced Field Leadership
  • Job Site Leadership
  • Sales Training (All Levels)
  • DISC Analysis & Team Behaviors
  • Family Business
  • Financial Leadership

We do not offer these additional services a la carte. They are available to Nolan Consulting Group clients only.
